Assignment #4

In the novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini, Mariam and Laila develop a strong relationship, very similar to that of a mother and daughter. Several times Mariam passes herself off as Laila's mother. This bond is emphasized later in the novel when Mariam kills Rasheed to save Laila. What circumstances or situations in both of these ladies lives, do you think could have fostered the growth of this relationship?

  1. Because of the forced marriage to Rasheed, the two women grew closer to one another as time progressed. After Mariam realized that she a Laila were in the same predicament, she no longer felt threatened. In chapter 32 Mariam found herself feeling sorry for the girl "...the girl's fall from grace ought to have pleased Mariam. But it didn't. To her own surprise, Mariam found herself pitying the girl." That alone provided an opportunity for them to become friends. They had both lost their parents and had no one to count on. For Laila, Mariam served as a mother and protector. And for Mariam, Laila was the child that she never had the chance to give birth to. For Mariam and Laila, they were each others best friend.
